Unrealized Public Commission (Niew Middelburg, Netherlands)

Wandering through the narrow streets of Nieuw Middelburg, looking into the poortjes, admiring the brickwork of the van Epen buildings, the first word that came to mind was gezelig. With such a quaint neighborhood, I still find myself somewhat surprised that it was established by Socialist, and Christian housing associations. Each with their own respective identity, architecture, and ideologies, now a thing of the past.

Therefore, I propose a work, which tells the story of Nieuw Middelburg: where it came from; what it once was, and where it is going. The work comprises of the text:

WIJ WAREN NIETS WIJ WORDEN GROOT VAN EEN TWEE VAN TWEE EEN

The letters will be made out flowers. The flowers to be used: Lilys, Jasmine, and the other flowers that were once street names in Nieuw Middelburg.
